My story
Greetings! My name is David. Ever since childhood I was always interested in learning foreign languages. When I was in high school I went off to France and learned French. But, when I came home I was looking to something more challenging. My high school didn’t have Chinese and I really wanted to learn. My neighbour studied Chinese at a private school and I really wanted a similar opportunity.
Anyways, when it came time to pick something to study in university I decided that I wanted to study a language that CHALLENGING and very USEFUL. At that time there was something called the “Asian Economic Miracle”. So…I picked Chinese!
I remember on the first day of class the room had about 20 students. The professor entered the room. The first thing she told us was that “Chinese is the hardest language in the world to learn and that half of you’re doomed to failure and I recommend you do yourselves a favour now and just leave now.” What happened? About half the students just picked up their knapsacks and left!
But, I stayed. For three years in university and for two summers in Taipei I battled it out – memorizing vocabulary, mastering the tones and writing characters over and over again. It’s been over 10 years since I heard that professor's discouraging words I am so glad that I did not listen!
The gift of Chinese language has opened so many doors in my life, and I'm sure it can for you too!
You CAN do it!
So, the main point is that you can learn Chinese – Just stay with me and go for it! And more importantly – never ever listen to words of discouragement, somebody telling you, “You can’t do it”, because you CAN!
