Do Your Homework...
One of the best ways to learn Mandarin Chinese is to do an audio CD/DVD course. I strongly recommend Pimsleur as I like their teaching technique of intense listening then verbal repetition, similar to my my teaching technique in my videos. Also, if you're going on a trip to China or Taiwan you may consider using an electronic dictionary or phrase book. These items come in extremely handy when trying to communicate with people and local people can teach you the correct pronounciation as you go!
